This is how you should pray: simply love God. Be in God’s presence in that love.
Do you remember the story of St. John Vianney and the old man? St. John was a village pastor in France. He was renowned as a holy and wise counselor and hundreds of people used to come to his church for confession. Each afternoon as he entered the church, he would see an elderly man sitting in a pew before the tabernacle. When he left the church several hours later, the man would still be there. One day St. John went up to the man and asked, “What do you do sitting here all afternoon, day after day?”
“I don’t do anything,” he replied. “I just look at God and God looks at me.”
When we practice the simple meditation of contemplative prayer, we love God for Godself alone. We have no other motive. We seek no personal favors, no consolations. We do not pray for anything, not for the church, not for our friends, not for sinners. Simply nothing, nothing, nothing—but loving God.
